Meet Terri – Founder of Ignited to Shine

I grew up with a narrow view of what success looked like. Coming from a military, middle-class family, I believed that true success only came from high-status careers, like becoming a doctor or lawyer. So, when I went to college, I pursued a path in law, thinking it was my only route to something ‘worthy.’

But early into college, I realized that law wasn’t for me. I felt out of place, frustrated, and uncertain about my future. Then, almost by fate, I connected with a counselor who opened my eyes to possibilities I hadn’t known existed. Through that guidance, I discovered the tech field: a world that felt natural and aligned with my strengths. I changed my major to IT, and suddenly, my career trajectory shifted. Doors opened that I hadn’t even considered: I secured an internship and, before graduation, a full-time job. I thought I had finally ‘made it.’

But that feeling of ‘making it’ was short-lived. Only seven months into my first corporate job, I was fired. My manager explained it as ‘having difficulty adjusting to the environment.’ It hit me hard. Getting hired, I learned, was just the beginning. Thriving in a corporate environment took skills and knowledge I didn’t have yet. The experience shattered my confidence. I felt humiliated and started questioning if I’d ever fit into the corporate world.

I had to start from scratch—teaching myself how to navigate professional spaces, build meaningful relationships, and make an impact. It was a challenging road, but each setback taught me something valuable. Now, over a decade later, I’ve built a successful career, earned multiple accolades, and worked at some of the world’s top companies. I finally feel confident and proud of where I am today.

Throughout this journey, I’ve met so many people like me—talented, driven individuals who weren’t exposed to the ‘rules’ of corporate success. People who feel lost, disconnected, or overlooked in spaces where they truly belong. That’s why I created Ignited to Shine. I know firsthand how powerful it is to have someone open up a new path for you, coach you through the nuances everyone assumes you already know, and remind you of your worth.
